The AWO Swabia starts the project “Eliminate child poverty!” and puts this in the coming years in the focus of the association's work. The aim is to enable children at risk of poverty to better share social participation. For almost 100 years, the Swabian district association founded in 1927 has been committed to social justice, equality and against discrimination and underlines this project.

“Unfortunately, children experience exclusion and discrimination in particular by poverty. This will shed valuable opportunities and increase the risk of radicalisation,” explains AWO President Brigitte Protschka. “Eliminate our project “About child poverty!” we want to find out whether we can strengthen children at risk of poverty with an improved financial base and promote their development so that their social participation improves and experiences them more strongly as part of society.”

Improve social participation through financial resources

The project also includes a scientific research project, which is supervised by the University of Social Work and Pedagogy (HSAP) in Berlin. In the first phase of the project, the focus is on whether and how children's participation in life in society improves if they have more money available for this. For this purpose, up to 40 children between the ages of eight and ten from AWO hills, which come from strongly poverty-prone families, receive a monthly grant of 100 euros. Children are allowed to spend this money on individual needs and social activities, such as excursions, cinema visits or the like. The editions are documented. As a result, the AWO Swabia ensures that the money does not flow into the family household, but is actually used for the children. In addition to the financial support, the children are also looked after educationally. In joint meetings, they learn a lot about their rights, participation and experience self-efficacy.
